Airfield upgrade, New Passenger terminal

Master Plan for Improvement and Modernization of existing Bonny Island Airport

Bonny Island is situated at the southern edge of Rivers State in the Niger Delta of Nigeria near Port Harcourt. In the early 1990s the Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with 3 international partners started the multi-billion dollar project Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas Limited (Nigeria LNG). Due to its strategic position, the island hosts various oil companies including Royal Dutch Shell, Mobil, Chevron, Agip, and Elf.
Port Harcourt is the closest city to Bonny Island. Ferries are the main form of transport to and from the island.
The proposed terminal is a generous column-free space accomplished through an engineering endeavour that brings together the knowledge of ship-manufacturers and the well-experienced industry of laminated timber for larger-span structures. The result is a unique blend of site-specificity and state-of-the-art engineering technologies, under a cost-effective attitude.
The organisation of the one-level-terminal building has been developed to guarantee the best possible flow of passengers and baggage at most economic way. A generous space serves as departure and arrivals hall on landside with the terminal roof providing sheltered outdoor space.
leit-werk’s commission includes the concept for upgrading of existing buildings and a new ATC tower.
