The Urban Carpet

Urban communication on street level

Putting the concept into action the URBAN CARPET is the first realised intervention of the KingsXperience, a project conceived and initiated by leit-werk on the basis of the largest urban re-development to date – King’s Cross Central in London.

The devices and interventions of the proposed Communication line aim to playfully provide information to the public about the site and the progress of the construction. The carpet – made of rubber and coir matting – conveys the existing layout of the site, whilst at the same time offering adults and children the chance to play hopscotch. It takes people by surprise, provoking spontaneous reaction. A live stream of the Urban Carpet is transmitted to St. Pancras Station showing public interactions.
