Airport Masterplan, new Passenger terminal

Airport landside urban Masterplan and new Passenger terminal

Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield is an international airport located at the former RAF Finningley airbase east of Sheffield. The Peel Group owns the airport with local councils retaining a minority stake, handling around 700,000 passengers in 2012.

leit-werk was commissioned to support WML Woods Bagot in the development of the airport, expanding terminal capacity according to further growth of the airport.

As a regional airport facing times of little occupation at some hours of the day the terminal concept includes non-aviation entertainment facilities inside and on top of the terminal. The façade of the one-storey building increases its presence by stretching above the terminal roof forming the enclosure of the terminal roof garden.

The terminal façade increases the visibility of the building for a better orientation of passengers approaching the terminal and turns into the canopy between the car park and the terminal as an independent element providing shelter.
